FlashForward has premiered and was it everything you hoped it would be?
In the pilot episode we’re thrust directly into the worldwide blackout where everyone becomes unconscious for a little over two minutes and gets a preview of their future. We meet our main characters: Mark, Olivia, Charlie, Nicole, Aaron, Stan, Janis, Bryce, Lloyd and Demetri.
As our characters try to piece together what caused the blackout, we’re left to ponder whether the future as they saw it is inevitable. And what about those people who only saw darkness, like Demetri?

Remember how Lost opened with the lead male character becoming conscious after a crash and the whole experience is very jarring? You know how people are saying that FlashForward is the next Lost? Well, apparently the show runners are taking that to heart, because we literally open the pilot episode of FlashForward with the lead male character (Mark Benford) becoming conscious after a crash. Close up on his face – he’s upside-down in a car and climbs out. We see dead/unconscious people on the road, people screaming and wandering around. Mark calls out for Demetri and there’s a dude on fire. Nice.
Four hours earlier, the city of LA is waking up to another morning. I think this is how that movie Volcano started out. That movie kind of sucks, but I like it. Mark opens his safe to pull out his gun and then goes to kiss his wife, Olivia. He makes breakfast for his daughter, Charlie and then heads off to work. The babysitter, Nicole, arrives just before he leaves.
On the patio, Olivia is now awake and leaving a message for her co-worker, Bryce, who wasn’t at work the day before. Bryce is walking along a pier (Santa Monica pier?). He stares out at the water and the other people and sees that he has five missed calls, but doesn’t bother checking his messages. Then he pulls a gun out of his bag.
Mark’s at an AA meeting, where his friend, Aaron Stark, is describing how his daughter was killed in duty in Afghanistan. They apparently had to identify her remains through DNA. Outside the meeting, Mark is beating up on Aaron for not calling a girl he tried to set him up with.
Cue the catchy music. Nicole is having sex with her boyfriend in the living room while Charlie sleeps upstairs.
Demetri Noh (played by John Cho) is on a stakeout with Mark, photographing some suspects. He’s chattering about his upcoming wedding. Cut to Aaron, who’s climbing up a phone pole (because he’s a city employee doing repairs). Olivia (who’s a doctor) is scrubbing up outside the OR. Back at the stakeout, two suspects (Khalid and Omar) walk out with an unknown lady and Demetri and Mark pursue the van. We’re also introduced to two other FBI employees (because Mark and Demetri work for the FBI) – Janis Hawk and Stan Wedeck. The van IDs the FBI guys and there’s a nice awesome car chase. Demetri calls in LAPD and air support. Bryce points the gun at his throat and we see all of our major characters doing everyday stuff and then…….flashes.
We see a few moments of Mark’s flash. He’s standing before a cork board in his office, going over information. We see words “blue hand” and “Mosaic”. He’s drinking. Two men with guns enter the office, presumably to kill Mark. Mark grabs his gun and hides. We see (I think) three stars tattooed on the arm of one of the men.
Then we’re back to the beginning of the episode, with Mark waking up. So, here’s the gist: everyone blacked out. And basically everything that was in motion that required human control has crashed. Or fallen out of the sky. Or caught on fire.
Bryce wakes up on the pier as Olivia wakes up on the floor of the OR. Nicole and her boyfriend wake up, as does Aaron, who’s hanging outside down from the pole.
Mark’s still shouting for Demetri on the freeway as a bus explodes close by. Sweet. All of downtown LA is chaos – cars turned upside down and fires everywhere. Demetri surfaces and he’s fine. He and Mark save someone from a car and a helicopter literally falls from the sky, crashing into a building.
Bryce gets up from the pier and sees people drowning in the water. He shouts that he’s a doctor and goes to help.
Nicole runs upstairs, shouting for Charlie. Charlie says she had a bad dream and that “there are no more good days” (and we have our episode title!)
Mark and Demetri come upon the van with the terrorist suspects and Demetri manhandles the mysterious blonde woman, but the woman says she didn’t cause the accident and that she was “somewhere else” when she blacked out. Bystanders all converge and realize that people in other cities experienced the blackouts. Demetri tells Mark to go check on his wife and Mark runs off. In slow motion. Because that’s the best way to convey a sense of urgency.
Naturally, there’s people looting. People suck. Mark runs through the streets and then sees a kangaroo. A KANGAROO. Right. Remember how Lost had polar bears? FlashForward has kangaroos.
Mark happens across a store with a working TV and people gather around to see a news anchor announcing that everyone in the world blacked out. How they obtain that information in a matter of minutes is beyond me. Did they call EVERY country?
Mark gets a call from Olivia, who tells him Charlie is fine and what happened in the OR. Olivia hangs up when an 8 year old is brought into the ER. Bryce rushes in and Olivia tells him to scrub up. The boy greets her by name.
Mark’s back at the FBI office with Stan, who’s trying to figure out what’s happening. Cut to Olivia trying to save the little boy’s life in the OR. The kid codes. At the FBI, Mark and STan are discussing possible causes of the blackout with Seth MacFarlane. The creator of Family Guy. Who apparently is friends with somebody important at the show and is doing a guest spot. Seth has a fantastic voice. In the OR, the kid becomes stable again.
A meeting has gathered at the FBI and Stan is asking about causes and how many people died. Oh, and the vice president’s plane crashed. Mark wants to discuss the blackouts themselves. He says that he didn’t “black out”. He actually had a flash of some sort of memory. No, not a memory, a flash of the future. He describes what he say. It was 10:00 p.m. on April 29, 2010. Some of the other people in the room say they saw the same date and time in their flash.
Demetri is bringing the blonde lady into the FBI in cuffs. Another FBI agent (Al) comes to talk to Mark and Demetri and say he has a way to corroborate flashes. He says his flash was of a meeting between himself and their Scotland Yard liaison (Fionna). So they go off to call Fiona who says she had the same flash as Al.
On the TV, some medical expert is talking about how people who had CAT scans during the blackout showed brain activity. Which means people weren’t sleeping, but were experiencing memories of events that haven’t occurred yet. Nicole and Charlie are watching the news and Nicole is crying. Mark catches a word on the TV: mosaic. He tells Stan and Janis that the word mosaic relates to the investigation into what caused the flash and he saw it in his flash. Demetri reveals that he saw nothing in his flash. Janis reveals that she was getting a sonogram. Apparently this is weird because she’s not pregnant and has no boyfriend. Oh, and Stan’s flash was him reading the paper on the toilet. Nice.
Demetri suggests that they start writing down and comparing stories. Janis says they should create a website where people can post and cross-reference their flashes and the FBI can use that to look for patterns. Mark suggests they follow-up on the names and leads he saw in his flash and Stan tells his team to get to work.
In his office, Demetri is helping Mark set up the cork board from his flash. They put up a card with the name “D. Gibbons”. Another says “blue hand” and Mark mentions a photograph of a burned doll with a bullet casing. He says he was wearing a friendship bracelet. Mark tells Demetri he was drinking again and cocking his gun. Demetri is upset that he didn’t see anything in his flash and he wonders whether he was he was dead in the flash.
Mark’s back at home, talking to Nicole. Nicole wonders if God did this to punish everyone.
At the hospital, Olivia and Bryce are watching over the little boy. His mother died in a crash and his father (Lloyd Simcoe) can’t be found right now. Bryce admits that he’s been going through some heavy things recently and he was thinking of killing himself on the Venice Pier that morning (not Santa Monica). But Bryce thinks the visions were a gift, because he was alive in his. Olivia says her vision wasn’t a gift because she “saw the end of her marriage”.
Mark’s meeting with Aaron at his house and admits he was drinking again in his flash. Bryce thinks that the future doesn’t have to happen like in the flashes. Mark reveals that Olivia will leave him if he starts drinking again. Aaron reveals that in his flash, he saw his daughter – alive. He hopes his future comes true.
Olivia arrives home and she and Mark go to bed. Mark tells her what he saw (but leaves out the fact that he was drinking). He asks what she saw, but she doesn’t want to talk about it. Olivia tearfully admits that she was saying goodnight to another man in her flash. She doesn’t know who he is, but she says he felt familiar. Mark says that just because they saw these flashes, doesn’t mean they’ll come true.
Lloyd Simcoe arrives at the hospital to see his son. Bryce greets him and says Olivia will be back tomorrow. Lloyd says he’ll talk to her when she gets in and we realize that Lloyd is the man from Olivia’s vision.
Mark is hanging out in the backyard when Charlie comes out to say she had a bad dream. She gives Mark a gift – a friendship bracelet. The same one he was wearing in his flash. He puts it on with great hesitation.
Cut to the FBI office, where Janis wants to show Demetri something that she found while analyzing hours of video footage. She shows the footage from a stadium in Detroit. At 11:00 PST everyone blacks out. Except for one man, who’s walking through the stadium. Very curious. The man looks around at all the unconscious people and then exits the stadium.
