Born in Virginia, USA, in 1978, Knighton began his acting career in 2000, when he appeared in Sally Hemmings: An American Scandal. He has guest starred on several television shows, including Law & Order, Ed, Law & Order: SVU, Bones and Related. He also had a recurring role in the series Life on a Stick. Knighton has also appeared in several feature films, including The Prince & Me and The Hitcher.

Knighton plays Dr. Bruce Varley on FlashForward and works with Olivia Benford. In the pilot episode, Varley is about to commit suicide when he his stopped by his flashforward.
